Jim's Story: Growing Up in Narragansett
As a lifelong resident of Narragansett who grew up on Durkin Drive, I cherish the uncomplicated joys and strong community bonds that define our town. My connection to Narragansett runs deep, from playing baseball at the Old Pier to my time in local schools, all of which have enriched my appreciation for what makes our community special. After graduating from the newly built Narragansett High School, I ventured across the country, gaining invaluable life experiences along the way. I then pursued my higher education at Providence College, where I proudly earned an accounting degree with honors. After college I started working with my father at Durkin Cottage Realty renting vaction homes to tourists, studetns, and yearly tenants. After my father retired, I worked hard to improve and exapnd the business while raising a family of three. In this time period I renovated and built many homes, condominums, the Break Hotel. Foundation in business, combined with my practical experience in real estate, has provided me with the insights needed to navigate both the economic and social aspects of our vibrant community.
Town Council Member
Jim's Political Journey
During my previous terms on the Town Council, I was committed to projects that would benefit our town in the long run. One of my proudest achievements was pushing for the extension of the Bike Path from 108 into Narragansett. Despite initial challenges, I worked tirelessly with the committee to find a solution that balanced the interests of all parties, resulting in the successful extension to the Community Center. Another significant accomplishment was our council’s purchase and subsequent development of Camp Jori into one of our over-55 affordable housing projects. This project was a collaborative effort across multiple councils and stands as a testament to what can be achieved when we work together for the common good. Moreover, under my insistence, the council allocated the necessary funds to complete the restoration of our beloved Towers, a symbol of our town’s history and resilience. I continue to serve on both the Towers Committee and the Friends Committee, ensuring that this landmark is preserved for future generations.
